Our Organization

In September of 1979, eight Rankin Inlet residents created the Sappujjijit Alcohol and Drug Educational Counselling Service. Later, in 1987, Sappujjijit formally became associated with the Canadian Association of Friendship Centres, where they then received additional funding and support. Consequently, they changed their name to Sappujjijit Friendship Centre. Finally, in 1998, Sappujjijit Friendship Centre underwent a final transformation when they were granted status as a registered charity. Thus began the legacy of Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre!

Today, we are becoming a dynamic regional organization that provides needed wellness programs and services across Kivalliq. We strive to work in partnership with Municipalities’, Government of Nunavut, Inuit Organizations, and the Federal Government.

Our Mission is:

  • to promote cross-cultural understanding through programs and special events;

  • to assist in the development of human resources by offering programs fostering individual and group learning, job readiness, and special projects; and

  • to develop programs to meet the needs of the community, and to encourage and further community and individual self-reliance, autonomy, and responsibility.
